The Stone House

the secret of the stone house
entrance to the cave of the Cyclops
towering high above the plain
Euripides leading us to the eyries of Aetna
from whence the Cyclops rules
looking out on his ocean of the void
awaiting the return of the hounds
the earth born spearmen vanquished
yet on the sea rides Odysseus
human yet hero
who with Dionysus at his side
will blind the Cyclops
and escape to toss and turn on the sea of revenge
forever in the grip of the gods
the vacant eye of the stone house
the plain deserted of men
their bones mixed in the gruel of the pot
a reminder of the cruelty of the Cyclops
and the shallowness of Silenus
man and god joined in deceit
undone in a dolphin day
